Music is a light in an uncertain world. A beacon. A reason to be.
I recently did a series of recap episodes, looking at the powerful and intimate conversations we had last year. These talks are fuel. They’re here to power your creativity, inspire action, and remind ourselves why we do it. Why we sacrifice. Why we love!
The year featured 26 guests. There were diamond and platinum record holders, emerging artists, Grammy winners, and acoustic scientists. The music they make ranges from Noah Kahan to Twisted Sister to Weird Al to GloRilla.
But there’s a certain throughline. I think it’s because there’s a type of person that dedicates themselves to the craft. We’re music people, united by a shared love.
Every time I have one of these conversations, I’m inspired to keep going. I hope it has the same effect for you. The War of Art is attritional; it’s a battle within one’s self. But it’s also within your power — the only way to lose to stop.
Also if you have the means, please consider donating to relief efforts for the LA music community at MusiCares. Or if you need relief, please check them out. They have great resources. Life will have disasters and great misfortune, but we can respond with love, with community, and with art.
This year, we’ll continue to work towards that end, with great conversations ahead. The History of Rock series will resume and so will the music theory musings and guest posts.
So go ahead and follow the companion podcast to this Substack wherever you indulge, participate in the way it all shapes up, because your input to the conversation is essential and helps makes this journey with music we’re on even the more special. Together we can totally contribute some stank to the scene.
Also my vinyl from ‘24 is still available. Pick one up and support the project, share yours and tag me on IG and I’ll gratefully re-share. Your purchase helps keeps the speakers on.
Thanks for reading, internet friends. Let’s have a music-filled year.
